When you have the opportunity to get paid to cycle McKenzie Pass, you take it. Even if you don't road bike, you take it. Even if you legitimately fear that your body will give out before you ascend 2,000+ feet over the 16-mile ride from Sisters to the Dee Wright Observatory...you take it.
After all, Highway 242 is only car-free for 6-8 weeks every Spring, giving cyclists and hikers a chance to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the area without constantly looking over their shoulder.
In June of 2014, I rented bike that cost more than my first car, strapped a GoPro to it, bought more energy gels than were probably really necessary; and headed up McKenzie Pass with my brother, boyfriend and a couple thousand people who were actually cyclists. It was terrible and amazing all at the same time.
